When Scammers Target the Vulnerable,
Communities Fight Back
The Problem
Every day, thousands of phone calls target people across Southern Africa. Elderly community members in the Eastern Cape, mine workers in Limpopo, farmers in the Namibian highlands, market traders in Harare. The scammers don't discriminate — they prey on trust.
The Turning Point
Community leaders, neighbourhood watch groups, faith organisations, and industry partners came together with a shared conviction: no one should face this alone. If we share what we know, we can protect each other.
The Solution
Inter-Sec is the result — a platform built by communities, for communities. One reported scam number in Windhoek protects a grandmother in Maseru. A flagged caller in Johannesburg shields a family in Gaborone. Together, we are stronger.
Protecting Namibia's farmers,
alongside the Namibian Agriculture Union.
Across Namibia's commercial and communal farms, older farmers are being targeted by phone scammers posing as buyers, banks, and government officials. The NAU brought Inter-Sec in to put a stop to it.
The scam call never reaches her.
No email. No password. No account. One code from her community, one permission on her phone. After that, scam numbers are blocked before her phone even rings.
What families have stopped together.
Protecting Your Community is Simple
Five Nations. One Mission.
Scammers don't respect borders. Neither do we. Inter-Sec unites communities across Southern Africa in a shared intelligence network where a threat flagged in one country protects families in another.
Four promises.
No fine print.
Inter-Sec isn't a business. It's a protection service the community runs for itself. These are the rules we've written into the product, and the ones we won't change.
Everything you'd ask before handing this to your mother.
Does she need a smartphone? She has an old Nokia.+
For call-blocking on her device, yes — a basic Android smartphone is needed. For a Nokia or feature phone, you can still use Inter-Sec from your own phone to look up numbers before you call her back, and to report numbers on her behalf. A feature-phone version is on the way.
Can I install it for her remotely? I live far away.+
Yes. You can send her the install link via WhatsApp or SMS, and walk her through the one-tap setup over a call. Inter-Sec does not require her to create an account or type in her phone number.
Will this cost her airtime or data?+
The app itself is free and uses under 5MB of data a week. Number lookups happen on her phone, not the cloud, so it keeps working when the signal drops or data runs out.
What if she speaks Afrikaans or Oshiwambo, not English?+
The app is available in English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Setswana, and Oshiwambo. More languages are being added as partner communities onboard.
What happens when a flagged scammer calls her?+
Nothing. Her phone never rings. Inter-Sec intercepts the call at the operating-system level before it reaches her — no banner, no popup, no startled pensioner. If she ever wants to see what was blocked, the Intercepted log shows every call and SMS by date, number and threat level.
What if a real caller gets flagged by mistake?+
Every flag is reviewed. Mis-reports can be overturned by the community and by the partner organisation (e.g. NAU) within hours. A real number with a long call history almost never gets flagged.
Is this legal under POPIA and RICA?+
Yes. Inter-Sec does not intercept calls, record audio, or collect personal information. It maintains a shared register of numbers that the community has reported as scams — the same way banks share fraud alerts.
